Frequently Asked Questions
Interview with Marla
How long have you been doing what you do and how did you get to be a Certified Health Coach?
I have been fascinated with Nutrition for as long as I can remember. When I was 13 I remember thinking that everyone seemed to be on a diet. It just didn’t feel right. But when in university I gained 10 kilos (22 pounds) I jumped on the bandwagon and began my adventure in the diet world. You name it, I did it. No diet was too bizarre. The cabbage soup diet.... I mean really? The extra weight stayed until I learned to stop reading the one size fits all diet books, and applied a common sense, whole foods approach to my life. See when I moved to Australia, my diet changed to one that suited my body type better. The “diet rules” I previously followed were all wrong for me and only made me fall off the wagon (and berate myself), leading to a cycle of deprivation then overeating. I discovered a way of eating in which I listened to what my body really wanted thereby avoiding the highs and lows of sugar and caffeine. This more balanced approach kept me feeling satisfied and with an extra spring in my step.
The missing piece?
I studied Nutrition in University but felt that something was missing from following all the ‘rules’ ie a 1200 calorie a day diet. There seemed to be a missing piece of the puzzle. So when I found IIN”s holistic approach to nutrition I found the missing piece. I knew that working with clients holistically was intuitively right and my clients are all the better for it!
What is health coaching?
Health coaching is a unique, exciting innovation in health and nutrition. As a health coach, I apply bio-individuality to discover what approach works best for you at this point in your life.
While most dietitians dwell on calories, fats proteins restrictions and list of good and bad foods, I work with my clients to create a happy, healthy life that is flexible, fun and free of denial and discipline.
On any given day, approximately 60 million Americans and 3 million Aussies are on a diet. Crazy, isn’t it?
No one way of eating works for everyone. I will guide you to find the food and lifestyle choices that best support you. I will also help you to make gradual lifelong changes that enable you to reach your health goals. So when the experts say ‘dairy is good for you” or fat is unhealthy”, it is too much of a generalisation. I look at your age health, physical activity, blood type and personal preferences to determine your dietary needs.
Who are your clients exactly?
My clients are busy people who are tired of being tired. They are often frustrated, overwhelmed and have tried LOTS of things that have not worked. Many struggle with sugar cravings or weight gain as they age. Others struggle with maintaining a healthful vegetarian diet. They want help in learning to cook, quick, healthy meals. They want to stop worrying about their health. My clients are ready to learn how to create healthy and productive habits that last a lifetime. They want the peace of mind of knowing they are doing what they can to set themselves up for a lifetime of good health.
Parents are the nutritional gatekeepers for your family, and with this comes an enormous responsibility to get it right. In addition my parent clients want the best for their families and are willing to put the time in to set them up for success.
What is expected of me as a client?
I work best with clients that have demanding lives and are ready to put their focus on taking care of themselves so they can feel great consistently. I work with busy people who come to me to learn to take care of themselves given their lack of time.
Who will this programme NOT work for?
This programme will not work for someone who is looking for a subscribed diet plan, with specific details on calorie count or number of fat grams. Clients must be open minded to look at some things with new eyes.
I choose to work with people who are ready to invest in themselves and their family.
What results can I expect?
You can expect to:
Foods made by someone you love contain a vital nutrient, something that holistic health coaches, for love. Food that is cooked by someone who loves you, who is happy to be cooking and nourishing you (including yourself), can be some of the best tasting food in the world. The energy of love is passed into the food and nourishes you in ways that go beyond micronutrients.
I chose to call my health coaching practice Vitamin L, because I apply that same philosophy to my clients, adding that extra TLC to get you in the best health of your life. What is missing for most people is a partner, mentor, a coach, a guide, a trusted source of information for their journey. In an essence, that is Vitamin L.
Where are you located? Do you work only with local clients?
My office is located in Clovelly, in Sydney, Australia. However, I have clients around the globe as phone coaching or skyping is extremely effective. Additionally, some clients might choose to do a mixture of phone and in person coaching to accommodate travel and/or sessions in their PJ’s.
